Don’t Let Tree Roots Uproot Your Pavers
“Invasive tree roots can be a problem for homeowners who are considering installing paving stones. Taking the necessary precautions to avoid roots growing beneath the surface of pavers is important.”
Invasive tree roots can be a problem for homeowners considering the installation of paving stones, as the roots could jeopardize the integrity of the paver system. And while there is nothing that can be done to completely stop tree roots from growing near installed pavers, there are some steps that can be taken to mitigate the risks.
Tree Roots and Pavers
- 1. Prior to the installation of pavers, all the tree roots in the vicinity should be removed. If the roots are left in place, they will eventually disintegrate, leaving a void that can cause the pavers to sink.
2. In areas where trees are present, it is recommended to leave a space of between 3-6 feet between the trees and the pavers. However, in the event the tree roots eventually do grow underneath the pavers (causing them to shift), the process of repairing the area is simple and cost effective. (Add a sentence here about how the pavers simply can be removed the roots demolished and the same pavers put back into place.
3. In some instances, it may be recommended to build a tree barrier utilizing a concrete footing (or other materials) that is inserted directly into the soil. This will vary depending on the project, and your ICPI certified project manager will be able to consult you further on this.
4. If trees are to be removed, it is highly recommended to have your landscaper do so prior to the pavers installation. It is also important to fully remove all roots and stumps; nothing should be left behind.
It is important to note that pavers are the BEST solution in areas that have lots of trees. Since trees can have roots that can grow up to a hundred feet in length, the potential for roots to grow into your patio or pool deck is always there. If you have a concrete deck instead of pavers, it is very likely to rise up or crack, and perhaps even both. With the installation of pavers, this type of scenario can be much more easily repaired without the unsightly “scars” of concrete repairs, and—very importantly—done at a much lower cost.
